Visit Oakland Nature Preserve

Looking for something free and fun to do on a weekend? I have a suggestion, visit Oakland Nature Preserve which has 128 acres of natural shoreline on Lake Apopka, Florida’s third largest lake. Last weekend I went to visit the Oakland nature Preserve and while walking on the wooden boardwalk trail I saw a bald eagle flying, several Cranes, 5 baby alligators of all different sizes an 2 snakes. Yikes! I could hear what sounded to be a very big adult alligator, but I could not see it. Also, the vegetation was just beautiful and in full bloom.  The tree canopied boardwalk trail  is about 2/3 of a mile long and  it weaves through the wetlands out to Lake Apopka. I never see more than a couple other people on the boardwalk or trail when I go to visit. It is a very calming and relaxing place to visit. See my video below of my outing last weekend in May.

The preserve offers  nature trails with its own museum or nature center.  It is great way to just enjoy the outdoors and nature and to get a little exercise at the same time. The trail system has 3 phases 2 of the phases of the trail system goes through the woods via paths. The 3rd is the wooden boardwalk trail which winds through the natural preserve wetlands out to Lake Apopka. Each phase of the trail system can be done on its own or combined. The nature walk can be started right off the West Orange Bike Trail where bikes can be parked and there is a visitor log in sheet before you start the trail. This phase takes you down a  trail about 1/4 mile through the woods to the museum and the entrance to the boardwalk portion of the nature trail which goes out about 2/3 of a mile until you reach Lake Apopka. The other option is to park your car or bike in the parking lot next to the museum this allows to bypass the first phase of the walking trails and go directly to the boardwalk trail.
