Some say Ocoee is an Indian word meaning “no cold”. Ocoee was originally called Starke Lake. Following the end of the Civil War, a number of settlers moved into the area including Captain Bluford M. Sims, a native of Tennessee. The land he purchased from Dr. Starke was the first citrus nursery in the United States. In 1886 Starke Lake’s name was changed to Ocoee. Many of the streets in Ocoee are named after the early settlers including Bluford, Sims, Maguire and more. Today the above mentioned citrus grove now houses the Ocoee town center and several historical buildings. Starke Lake is a community gathering place where one can picnic, launch a boat, water ski, jet ski, fish on the covered dock, or just watch the ducks parade around the grounds and brick streets. Starke Lake is stocked with bass. Great for fishing.  On the weekends, Bill Breeze Park has  Movies under the stars which a low cost fun event for everyone. For history buffs, the oldest Christian church in Florida still in use is in Ocoee minutes from Starke Lake. The city of Ocoee acquired the Withers-Maguire House in 1984 and it is listed in the National Register which is now used for events.
