OVIEDO was recognized by Relocate America and CNN Money as a 2009 Top 100 City to live in. Oviedo is located in the NW section of Seminole County. Oviedo, located in the NW section of Seminole County, is the county's fastest growing city, doubling in size over the past decade. There is an olympic-size community pool for Oviedo residents only.
Formally incorporated as a city in 1925 Oviedo's roots date back to just after the Civil War in 1865 when homesteaders came to the shores of Lake Jesup.Prior to the arrival of these adventurous souls, including former slaves, and immigrants from Europe, primarily Sweden, the area was populated by the Timucua, a clan of native Americans who were a part of the Seminole tribe.Early settlers relished the fertile land. They grew crops of celery and citrus. They traveled by steam ships and riverboats to sell their wares in Sanford and road over wagon-wheel rutted roads to Orlando.Some of the communities in Oviedo include Alafaya Woods, Aloma Woods, Chapman Oaks, Kingsbridge, Little Creek and Remington park…to name a few. The homes in Oviedo are affordable ranging from under 100K to over one million in the upscale community of Ellington Estates.UCF (University of Central Florida) is just South of Oviedo... UCF is a 4-year public college with almost 40,000 undergraduates and almost 7,000 graduate students. UCF is nationally renowned for its pioneering research…from excavating archaeological digs to researching a cure of AIDS and most recently discovery of a gene that controls the development for obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
