OCOEE

w

Ocoee is a GREAT place to live!  Close enough to the Theme parks…but not too close.  Ocoee is located in the NW section of Orange County just North of Windermere.

Some say Ocoee is an Indian word meaning "no cold".   Ocoee was originally called Starke Lake.  Attempting to escape a malaria epidemic, Dr. J. D. Starke led a group of slaves into the area settling on the shores of Starke Lake in the mid 1850's.  Following the end of the Civil War, a number of settlers moved into the area including Captain Bluford M. Sims, a native of Tennessee.  The land he purchased from Dr. Starke was the first citrus nursery in the United States.  In 1886 Starke Lake's name was changed to Ocoee.

Many of the streets in Ocoee are named after the early settlers including Bluford, Sims, Maguire and more.  The oldest Christian church in Florida still in use is in Ocoee minutes from Starke Lake.  The city of Ocoee acquired the Withers-Maguire House in 1984 and it is listed in the National Register.

Today the above mentioned citrus grove now houses Ocoee town center and several historical buildings.  Starke Lake is a community gathering place where one can picnic, launch a boat or skido, fish on the covered dock or just watch the ducks parade around the grounds and brick streets.  Starke Lake is stocked with bass….great for fishing.

The 19-mile West Orange Bike Trail flows right through Ocoee.  Great place to bike, jog, hike or ride your horse.  Ocoee celebrates the annual "Founder's Day" with a parade and games.

Homes vary from start-up homes, to guard-gated communities and everything in between.     Some of the better buys in Metro Orlando are here in Ocoee.
