ORLANDO is one of many cities across the country that has made a firm commitment to preserve its downtown area and surrounding older neighborhoods. In the 1970's Orlando fostered a plan to preserve several communities in the City of Orlando into historic districts.
From 1980 to 1994 five historic districts were created. Within the five districts there are nearly 1,400 historically significant buildings, commercial and residential….built from the 1880's to as young as the 1940's. Four of the five historic districts are named after a prominent lake in or near their boundaries.A variety of architectural styles and forms can be found in the five districts including bungalows, Craftsman, minimal Traditional and Colonial, Mediterranean, Mission, Neoclassical and Tudor revivals. Before you make certain exterior changes to your property, a Certificate of Appropriateness must first be issued by the Historic Preservation Board. The City takes an active role in preserving the architectural heritage and offers a property tax exemption for contributing buildings in the district. The ten-year exemption remains with the sale of the property.Three sites within the Lake Lawsona Historic District have been recognized as local historic landmarks. They are H. H.
