GOTHA personifies "Old Florida" with its cascading oak trees everywhere you turn. GOTHA is located in the SW section of Orange County just East of Windermere.
GOTHA was registered as a historical preservation district in 1995. It was founded in 1885 by Henry Hempel and named after his hometown in Germany.Florida's Pioneer Horticulturalist, Henry Nehrling, homestead is nestled under massive oak trees in the hamlet of Gotha. His homestead is recognized as one of Florida's eleven most endangered historical sites in 2009. The homestead and surrounding gardens have come under disrepair in recent years. The "Help Us Save Nehrling Gardens" has set up an Acquisition Fund to save this property from destruction. Go to www.nehrlinggardens.org for additional information. The centenarian structure that houses Yellow Dog Eats in Gotha was originally established in 1879 as a private residence and then the historic Fishers Country Store. Yellow Dog Eats is a favorite among locals. The tasty café serves up healthy salads and sandwiches and has a GREAT selection of wine. A devastating fire almost destroyed the structure a couple of years ago. It was meticulously rebuilt and restored to its rustic charm. Head Chef, Fish Morgan, welcomes you to enjoy the rustic inside charm or dine beneath vines in the gardens out back.Across the street is the Zion Lutheran Church founded in 1915. Also in the area is a community park for numerous activities and the Gotha Community Center that was originally a one-room schoolhouse.Windermere Chase, Oaks of Windermere, Lake Fischer and the upscale community of Braemar are priced from 200K to over a million dollars.
